A firm favourite of ours is the picturesque bike tour from Tegernsee to Siebenhütten. The route takes you along the well-developed Munich-Venice long-distance cycle path through the conservation area of the Weißachauen. Despite biking here in the Tegernsee valley you can expect a total elevation of almost 200m along the route. The highest point of the bike tour is at 837 meters.

Route Description
Starting in the town of Tegernsee in a southerly direction, the route takes you past the Bräustüberl Tegernsee and up the hill towards Rottach-Egern. Follow the signposted cycle path in the direction of Achensee and Kreuth. The traditional farmhouses soon give way to the Weißachauen conservation area. The undulating bike path takes you along the Weißach river, which bundles the various tributaries in the Kreuth Valley and flows into Lake Tegernsee.
Continue past the mountaineering village of Kreuth until you finally reach the ducal fish farm Wildbad Kreuth shortly before the ascent to Siebenhütten. Here the forest starts to thin out and you can catch a glimpse of the impressive mountain panorama of the Tegernsee mountains. Expect a 60 meter incline on the final stretch of the bike tour.
The history of the former “seven alpine huts from the seven farmers” (Siebenhütten) goes back to the early 19th century. At that time, the huts formed a goat farm to cover the whey needs of royal Bad Kreuth (today Wildbad Kreuth). Today it is a popular destination south of Lake Tegernsee. The easy hike to Siebenhütten is particularly popular with families. Normal opening times for the moutain hut are May to October, depending on snow conditions.
The way back to Tegernsee is on the way there. A popular stopover in Kreuth, just before Rottach-Egern, is the Tegernsee natural cheese dairy. Visitors will find numerous types of cheese made from regional ingredients, a shop, a show dairy and a restaurant with a beer garden.
Summary
The route through the Weißachauen to Siebenhütten is one of the most beautiful bike tours on Lake Tegernsee. The view from the saddle changes very few kilometers and runs almost entirely along dirt tracks, cycle paths and quiet roads. If the final incline is too strenuous, jump off and push the last kilometer to the hut – it’s downhill all the way into the valley on the way back!
