Kampen

Kampen Hike from Tegernsee

The Kampen are a group of mountains with three peaks (Ochsenkamp, Auerkamp, Spitzkamp) between Bad Wiessee and Lenggries in the Tegernsee mountains. The sensational 360-degree view and the various route options make up for the somewhat monotonous start. Compared to other hikes around Tegernsee, the ascent to the Kampen is classified as moderately difficult. Hikers should be prepared for a few exposed but secured passages on the approach to the Spitzkamp.

Passing the Stinkergraben – a sulphur water spring with a distinct smell – the stony path winds through the forest, turning into a narrow hiking trail, ending at the Hirschtalsattel where you can stop for a breather. The Hirschtalsattel is a mountain pass that separates the Fockenstein to the north from the Ochsenkamp to the south and has a clear view of the Kampen mountain range.

The last half hour requires some patience along steep and rocky paths up to the Ochsenkamp (1595 m), but is compensated by the spectacular view down to Lake Tegernsee. The nearby classic hikes to the Hirschberg, Fockenstein and Ross-/Buchstein with the Tegernseer Hut can also be seen perfectly from the summit. Sure-footedness is essential on the high-altitude hiking trail that follows over the Auerkamp (1607 m) and the Spitzkamp (1604 m).

Descent from the Kampen

Hikers can choose from several options:

  • You can either hike back to the starting point in Bad Wiessee.
  • If you are fit enough, hike from the Hirschtalsattel and the Fockenstein, then to the Aueralm and back to the starting point in Bad Wiessee.
  • If you are travelling with the Bavarian Regiobahn (BRB), you can also cross the Kampen in a westerly direction to Lenggries. The BRB train runs from Lenggries station to Munich main station.
