Cheese Dairy Tegernsee

A trip to the natural cheese dairy with its shop, show dairy, restaurant and beer garden with barefoot path and playground is a must during a visit to Tegernsee. Visitors can not only experience genuine regionality within the framework of small-scale agriculture but also try unique cheese specialties made from hay milk according to the German “Purity Law”.

Cheese has been made here as part of a cooperative since 2007. The project was initiated by a dozen farmers who wanted to strengthen traditional agriculture and preserve the local landscape structures. Today, 20 local farmers supply the natural cheese dairy with fresh hay milk every day. In addition to 20 different types of cheese, also yoghurt and curd cheese are produced on a daily basis.

Visitors can taste the cheese and milk products either on a tour of the show dairy or in the shop and restaurant. The hay milk comes from cows whose forage consists of 100% hay and pasture grass. In summer they graze on the herb-rich meadows of the Tegernsee valley. Full-bodied, intense and sweet in taste, the end product whether soft or hard cheese, is a true taste experience.

The right wine, a suitable mustard or chutney, even a beer or a schnapps: if it goes with cheese, you can buy it here at the cheese shop in the rear of the building. The wide selection of snacks is great for a hike or for a relaxed evening picnic at the lake.

Tip: A spiral staircase at the back of the shop takes you down to a small window into the aging cellar. If you want to learn more about how the products are made, you can book a place on one of the guided tours in the show dairy.

Tours of the Show Dairy

During a tour of the in-house cheese dairy, visitors are initiated into the secrets of cheese-making by one of the master cheesemakers personally. After watching the cheesemakers at work in the show dairy, it’s off to the maturing cellar.

The “Alles in Butter” tour (90-minutes including butter production and a small snack) is great for children. Children pay €8, adults €14.50.

If you want to experience the show dairy live, don’t forget to register in advance. There are no guided tours on Sundays and public holidays.

One thing is certain: whether with or without cheese, the food here tastes fantastic. Portions are generous and the quality of the food is excellent. The cheese and spinach dumpling dish with brown butter and mountain cheese consists of a whopping four dumplings. The small cheese taster comes with six large slices of cheese as well as various cheese cubes. Are the portions perhaps so large because the guests just can’t get enough of the delicious food?

Many guests drive to the natural cheese dairy solely to eat at the restaurant. Especially in summer it is an experience not to be missed: grab a seat at one of the wooden benches on the meadow in the beer garden and enjoy fantastic cheeses with a view of the Hirschberg and the Blauberg mountains.

The small cottage garden next to the beer garden with its classic cottage garden plants, berry bushes, aromatic and kitchen herbs, edible flowers and tea and medicinal plants is perfect to walk off your meal.
